The redevelopment of Ashfield Police Station provided improved accommodation for:
– Ashfield Local Area Command
– Regional Area Command
– Transit Police
The project can be divided into two components:
- Existing building
The original Ashfield “Lock-Up” was constructed in 1888 in the Victorian Italianate style. It was retained and integrated into the overall development, providing office accommodation for the Transit Police. Conservation works included the removal of unsympathetic alterations and additions, and the reinstatement of the original exercise yard as a staff courtyard. - New building
A new 3-storey Police Station was constructed a substantial distance from the northern and eastern elevations of the existing building. This strategy minimized the visual impact of the new building on the existing building, providing a planted breathing space between the two.
